Narberth Classic - Round 5 2009 Report
Tim does it his 'way
Report: Dave Gittins
An entry of 72 solos and 15 sidecars made for Narberth in Pembrokeshire for round 5 of the Cambrian Tyres Welsh Classic Motocross Championship.
Warm, dry conditions made for some quick racing on the extended West Atheston track which seemed to suit Tim Manton and Carl Pope, Tim Manton and John Price, for they were the most successful solos on view. Paul Morris and Paul Harker, along with their passangers, Mark Snell and Matt Williams ruled the sidecar roost.
Tim Dallaway departed home for Devon with no less than six wins to his credit. Three wins from three starts in both the Metisse and up to 350cc class made him the only hat-trick hero of the day. Riding his father's Triumph Metisse he was too good for a field which included, Phil Edwards, Terry Challinor and Dave Cooper.
The closest racing of the day was between Tim Manton and Carl Pope, first in the Pre-68 class and then in their age related race. They werevery evenly matched throughout but Tim made the most of some cracking starts to head Carl each time.
John Price always reigns supreme in the Pre 74 up to 250cc class at the meetings in Wales, and this looked another such occasion. With two race wins under his belt he set off to complete his hat-trick in the third leg when disaster struck. The exhaust of the Honda came adrift leaving Ian Davies to take the flag, which with his pair of second places earlier was enough to give him the overall win.
Ian also notched a pair of wins in the Pre 74 over 250cc class but a no score in the first leg meant he finished third overall behind class and current championship leader Dan Evans riding a Husqvarna 400.
